First off, Pucknuts update. To date, The New Jersey Devils are still holding the number 6 spot in the eastern conference. It looks like the playoffs will be eventuality for the Devils, however it could very well be possible to be knocked out of the running for the Stanley Cup. Fingers crossed.
So on to The Apuckalypse Project, and we will start with an integral part of your ice hockey gear: Ice Skates.
The key to selecting skates, if you are unable to go to a store and get sized for skates, is that the size of your regular footwear is not transferable to the size of skates you will wear. You will take your shoe size (some places even suggest using the size of formal shoes you wear) and go down 1 1/2 to 2 sizes below. For example, if you wear a size ten in shoes, then you you would select either an 8 1/2 or 8 in skates. Keep in mind whether or not you have wider feet or narrow arches or the like, and select sizes to accommodate. You will your skates to be snug to tight, depending on personal preference. Some players like tighter for better control of their skates.
Another feature of skates to be mindful of is the ankle part. There are two choices: aggressive, in which the ankle part of the skate is angled forward towards the front of the skate, and relaxed which runs straight up and down. Again, this is more for personal preference, but some sites state that aggressive style is more suited for your stronger skaters while defensive players tend to gravitate towards the relaxed fit.
Once you have your skates purchased, the next step is to break them in. Obviously, by skating on them, this will help break them in. Another process is baking your skates, which reduce the time of breaking them in and forming them to the shape of your feet. The process has you preheat the oven to a low heat, then insert a skate and allow it to bake in the oven, generally about 4-8 minutes. Once the time has expired, you remove the skate and place it on, lacing up and sitting with the skate on for 20-30 min while the skate cools and forms to the shape of your foot. After the time, set them standing upright overnight. It is important to note not to overcook your skates, or it will result in an early deterioration of your skates. If you visit icewarehouse.com, or a search on you tube, there is a process which greatly shows how to bake skates.
So now…. go skate.
See you on the ice….
